Just came across this clip of Mel Gibson on Joe Rogan talking about how he stopped smoking. He says the only that helped was a seemingly silly self-help book, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, by Alan Carr.
For me, too, this is what helped me stop smoking from one day to the next following decades of puffing ciggies, roll ups and reefers.
I think what worked for me was the author’s novel approach in that he didn’t just list a series of horrible inevitable scenarios one could expect unless the habit was dealt with.
Rather, the book’s tone was light and pleasant and actually built up a glorious picture of my future life once I no longer needed to smoke.
Thus, the whole human system is preparing for the day, the new healthy life starts..in stead of thinking I had to give up something, I knew I would be gaining something.
Towards the end of the book, the author stresses that you shouldn’t quit right away although that’s exactly what you want to do.
The reader is urged to wait two weeks and then stop. Which is what I did and I never touched another cigarette again. Good riddance!
